PAUL GREEN ROCK ACADEMY
The Paul Green Rock Academy (PGRA) is the latest, audition only, music school from School of Rock founder Paul Green. A school for serious young musicians, PGRA is dedicated to playing real shows in front of real audiences. We have spent the past three years serving as the backing band for Jon Anderson of Yes and Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers, playing over 50 shows with each of those luminaries, including a 2023 European tour with Jon.
Paul's love of Frank Zappa's music goes back to his punk rock youth, and his appreciation of the Zappa catalogue as the ultimate teaching tool started in the early days of SOR. "It is really one stop shopping for everything I want to teach...modal theory, time signatures, all kinds of genres...it is all in there somewhere" says Paul.
Paul also discovered how great Zappa audiences are when SOR opened for Project/Object at the Trocadero in Philadelphia, way back in 2002. This inspired him to make Zappa a huge part of the curriculum, and over the years he has had his students play Zappanale Festival seven times (every year a headliner since the first) and tour with Ike Willis, Napoleon Murphy Brock, & Ed Mann.
PGRA is incredibly excited to add Ray White, Robert Martin, and Scott Thunes to that list.
Paul: "..our students will learn so much from them!"
In addition to the Zappa program, Paul's students have done tours backing up Brendon Small, John Wetton, Adrian Belew (who hired two of Paul's students for his band), and have played one off shows with Bill Bruford, Donald Fagen, Eddie Vedder, Ann Wilson, Steve Hackett, and Alice Cooper...just to name a few.
Paul's students have gone on to play in/for: Roger Daltrey/The Who, Adrian Belew, Doctor Dog, Phony Ppl, Olivia Rodrigo, and Arc Iris.
